Kako bilo, "Hugo" je nominiran u kategorijama najboljeg filma, najboljeg redatelja, adaptiranog scenarija, najbolju glazbu, montažu zvuka, mix zvuka, dizajn kostima, fotografiju i za najbolje vizualne efekte. Slijede najveći dobitnik s nedavne dodjele Zlatnih globusa, francuski nijemi crno-bijeli film "The Artist" s deset nominacija, "Igra pobjednika" (Moneyball) i Spielbergov epski ratni film "Put rata" (War Horse), imaju po šest, "Nasljednici" (The Descendants) i "Muškarci koji mrze žene" (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) po pet, dok je četiri nominacije zaradila drama "Tajni život kućnih pomoćnica" (The Help).
U red iznenađenja spada i uvršatavanje dosad neprimijećenog i prosječno ocijenjene drame Stephena Daldrya "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" s miljenikom Akademije Tomom Hanksom u glavnoj ulozi, te nominacija za glavnu mušku ulogu Demiana Bichira za ulogu meksičkog imigranta u Americi u izvrsnoj drami "A Better Life".
U isto vrijeme, iznenađenje je i potpuno ignoriranje izvanrednog atmosferičnog krimića "Drive", kao i njegovog glavnog glumca Ryana Goslinga, koji nije nominiran ni za upečatljivi nastup u Clooneyevim "Martovskim idama". Jedina nominacija za "Drive", je jedva vrijedna spomena kategorija montaže zvuka.
Dodjela nagrade Oscar ove godine bit će održana 26. veljače.
